French Intern Guillaume

Guillaume DavidAfter a very fun three months, Guillaume’s harvest internship comes to a close. His stay has been particularly special to us as he brings the Hafner Vineyard Internship Program into the second generation! His father, Ludovic David, now the General Manager at Château Marquis de Terme, a Grand Cru Classé winery in Margaux, was our intern in 1990. Twenty-seven years later, Guillaume continues the Hafner intern tradition. It’s been a pleasure for us to have Guillaume at the winery and also in our home. He has a great sense of humor making us all laugh whether it’s at the winery break time or around our dinner table.

Photo Contest Winners

Hafner Photo Contest WinnersTo mark our 50th anniversary, earlier this Summer we launched the "50 Years, 50 States & You" Photo Contest. Patrons were often creative, and sometimes sneaky, in identifying the state where the photo was snapped. Palm trees in FL, corn fields in IA, potatoes in ID, maple syrup in VT. Park signs and road markers were clear identifiers, as were iconic buildings and landmarks. Several families, seized by the competitive spirit, packed Hafner wine on multi-state trips. We all smiled broadly thinking of passers-by driving on freeways watching fun and smiling people posing in front of state "welcome" signs. See who the winners are!

Harvest to Date

Chardonnay HarvestHarvest is always an exciting time of year, but it can bring anxiety and nervousness. It reminds us that we are at Mother Nature’s will, and this year is no exception. Just before Labor Day, the temperatures soared to over 105°F for four days straight. That ripened the grapes quickly, triggering us to pick our Chardonnay. That meant no holiday weekend for the vineyard and cellar crews…Mother Nature had other plans. Recently, the temperatures dipped and we had some rain, which has stalled ripening. This meant the vineyard and cellar crews could catch their breath. Winemaker Parke Hafner and Vineyard Manager David Huebel each answered a few questions about Harvest 2017 so far and still to come.

Meet the Team - Dick

Dick Hafner"Meet the Team" is our blog series that introduces each of the Hafner Vineyard team members. We answer a series of questions about ourselves and our time at Hafner Vineyard. Mary and I started Hafner Vineyard 50 years ago. During those five decades, I assumed many different roles and have a bounty of stories. Here I share a few. One that people find surprising is that I only visited the ranch once and didn't look at any other properties. I knew this was the one.

Farmers' Market Dinners

Hafner Sisters at MarketOur Grandmother (Mary) taught us the fun of shopping local and “eating with the seasons”. She shared her love of the farmers’ market with us, so this Spring when the market opened, we found ourselves continuing the tradition. Kate (who works at Hafner Vineyard and lives nearby) visits the market most every Saturday, while Grace (who lives in San Francisco) shops at many markets - the Ferry Building, Fort Mason or her neighborhood one. With the bounty of produce, we are inspired to create dinners with as much from the market as we can, just like Grandmother did. We thought it would be fun to share how we both build a meal around the farmers’ selections.
